Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmer for 2023 was announced Thursday afternoon at Canada’s Farm Show in Regina.
Leguee Farms is a grain operation located in the Weyburn-Fillmore region of southeast Saskatchewan. It is managed by the third generation—Jake Leguee and his sister Sarah—-along with their brother-in-law Erik Nikolejsin.
Jake Leguee says the trio use a team approach to manage the 15,000 acre operation as a team. Intense management, finding new ways to look after their soil and maintaining margins are all very important.
Leguee Farms was originally established in 1956, and the acreage base has increased seven-fold since the late 1980’s when the farm adopted minimum till. The original farm had cattle but those were phased out in the early 2000’s to focus on crop production.
About ten years ago . . . the farm transitioned from the second generation to the third generation. As for the farm structure . . .
The Leguee family places a strong emphasis on community and leadership. Jake is a an elected director of the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commision. Jake and Sarah are also involved with APAS and all three farm partners volunteer locally with coaching, the local recreation board, RM council and volunteer fire department. Jake is also the author of a popular blog called A Year in the Life of a Farmer.
The Leguee farm will now represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Outstanding Young Farmer competition in November at Montreal.
