A new Statistics Canada report argues that there isn’t a labour shortage in Canada at all, as opposed to what many economists have been saying. The report suggests job vacancies are the result of a mismatch between available jobs and the skills and salary expectations of potential employees. Statistics Canada says that between 2016 and 2022, there were always more unemployed individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher education than there were jobs available requiring that level of education. For jobs requiring a high school diploma or less, a shortage of qualified workers didn’t appear until the third quarter of 2021.
