The Battle of the Atlantic Parade and HMCS Unicorn open house is today (Sunday).
According to the Government of Canada’s website, the Battle of the Atlantic was the war against the U-boats from 1939 to 1945, which was the formative experience for the Royal Canadian Navy in the 20th century.
The parade march begins at 10:30, heading south down 4th Avenue North, then circling City Hall and returning for the Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony in front of HMCS Unicorn on 4th Avenue. The open house follows at noon.
In 2023 the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve celebrates 100 years of keeping Canada safe and secure. There are 24 Naval Reserve divisions in Canada with two in Saskatchewan: His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Unicorn in Saskatoon, established 100 years ago as of yesterday, and HMCS Queen in Regina.
Lieutenant Commander Michael Su says some events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary includes the march today and a charity golf tournament, with the proceeds being donated to KidSport.
The Naval Reserve is a training ground for volunteers who may be interested in joining the Canadian Navy which was extremely important during the Second World War.
