Since Remai Modern changed their admission fee to by-donation, the attendance numbers have grown by 72.7 per cent.
The museum used to charge $12 for general admission and switched to by-donation admission on October 22nd of last year.
Aileen Burns, one of the museums Executive Directors and CEOs, said the gallery has really come alive since the change.
Visitor numbers have also surpassed their pre-pandemic levels by 13 per cent when comparing numbers from early 2020 and now.
Remai Modern has adopted a new method for counting attendants, as well. The museum used to count visits, which could include a single person visiting several spaces in the building. Now, they count visitors, meaning each person is only counted once after entering the building.
Even with that change, Remai Modern still has the best per capita visitation for art museums in the country.
