Inmates began moving from the old Urban Camp facility to the new one this morning (Mon) at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre. Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister, Christine Tell, says the cost of the new Urban Camp is just under $8.6 million. There are 50 reduced custody beds and the facility will deliver programming and services to these offenders transitioning back into the community. It’s the only urban working camp in the province. Tell explains that inmates participate in supervised work assignments in the community, and while in Urban Camp, they also receive programming to address issues such as mental health and addictions.
Tell also updated what’s happening with the Saskatoon Remand Centre expansion. She says it’s about 15 per cent complete, and when done, the $135 million project will have two units with a total of 156 cells capable of holding 312 people. It will include a safe environment for individuals on remand and more space to successfully manage the corrections population. It’s expected to be done by June of 2025.
