Students at the University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry are the first in the country to receive new virtual reality simulators to train with.
The school purchased 10 of the high-tech simulators, so the students could practice with hyper-realistic visuals, as well as textural and sound effects. Dr. Walter Siqueira, Dean of the College of Dentistry, says the technology is a mixture of virtual reality and hands on training and is available to practice with almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He says his students are excited and taking full advantage of it. He finds them in the lab during all hours of the week, and even on Saturdays. The simulators were inspired by the technology pilots use for training, and Siqueira says the realism will be a huge benefit to the students for when they work on real people. Not only is USask the first school in the country to receive the technology, but they are among very few in North America to have it, as well.
