Between travel restrictions and winter weather, 2022 was hard on passenger traffic numbers at the Saskatoon Airport, recording only 64 per cent of the traffic levels they had in 2019. Airport Authority spokesperson CJ Duchinski says although Sunwing cancelled 35 per cent of their flights, and air Canada got rid of their flights to Calgary, there were still some positive outcomes in 2022. After federal travel restritions were lifted, passenger traffic recovered to 80 per cent of 2019 pre-pandemic volumes.
The additions of Flair and Swoop, two low-cost airlines giving service to Toronto and Vancouver, and return of Air Canada’s seasonal route to Montreal were both positive expansions. In 2023, Duchinski expects some new route announcements, services, and frequencies entering the market, and in the summer, the airport will be resurfacing their entire runway.
