Thursday, February 9th marked the fifth anniversary of a verdict in a court case that captured national attention.
Gerald Stanley was found not guilty of second degree murder and manslaughter in the shooting death of 22-year-old Colton Boushie from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation. It happened in a farmyard in the Biggar area on August 9th, 2016.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations issued a news release in support of the Boushie family. The Office of the Treaty Commissioner also sponsored an event Thursday afternoon at the University of Saskatchewan. Colton’s mother, Debbie Baptiste and three other speakers participated in a panel discussion. The family maintains the Stanley jury with five non-indigenous people was not representational of the area’s population.
