The project is being led by Dr. Jose Perez Casal with the Vaccine and Infection Disease Organization (VIDO) located at the University of Saskatchewan.
Foot rot is a hoof infection which can be transmitted to other animals. The current vaccine is based on only one of four common bacteria that causes foot rot. Another objective is developing a single shot vaccine that has longer term immunity.
The project recently received $243,017 in funding from the federal/provincial (Saskatchewan) Agriculture Development Fund. Dr. Perez Casal hopes new technology will allow his team to develop an improved footrot vaccine in as soon as five years.
