The city of Regina will be gaining an additional shelter to provide more space for those in need this winter. Regina’s former YMCA building is being transformed into a space that will be open 24 hours and fit 40 people comfortably.
The temporary shelter is being leased through The Nest Health Centre and will be managed by Regina Treaty and Status Indian Services. The Saskatchewan government is providing the organizations with 400 thousand dollars to operate the new space.
A news release from the City of Regina indicates the new shelter will allow on-site medical care to be given to residents who’ve been needing it. Professional support services will also be available to shelter occupants.
The City’s current operation to assist vulnerable people, the warming-bus, will be paused after the new shelter opens on January 30th.
