British Columbia’s public safety minister has confirmed that a Burnaby RCMP officer was killed while on she was on duty. Mike Farnworth calls it a tragic and horrific situation. Just before 11:30 this morning in Burnaby, emergency crews responded to Broadview Park, including the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, the canine and gang units, and officers from theVancouver and New Westminster police departments. Media reports say the officer was stabbed to death at a homeless camp while assisting a bylaw officer.
Canada’s leaders are posting their thoughts and condolences. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has Tweeted that his thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer. Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Marco Mendicino, says he was devastated to hear of the loss and his heart is with the officer’s family, friends and the entirety of the Burnaby RCMP detachment. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says it is heartwrenching and an unimaginable loss in the line of duty.
The Saskatoon Police Service says on Twitter that their thoughts are with the Burnaby RCMP after the loss of one of their own in the line of duty. “Our support and deepest sympathy extends to the family and loved ones of the officer and policing colleagues across the country. We stand with you after these tragic events.”
