SGI has developed a new framework to allow e-scooters to operate on municipal roads across Saskatchewan, something not previously allowed.
The insurance company’s Tyler McMurchy says there will be regulations governing their use. They would only be allowed on a road that can operate vehicles at 50 kilometres an hour or less; they can’t be operated at more than 20 km/h; the operator age has to be 16 years and older.
As well, it is dependent on whether or not the municipality in which you live allows for e-scooters. He says its not exactly the same but is similar to the regulations that oversee the use of power bicycles.
The City of Saskatoon is drafting regulations to oversee a shared electric scooter, or e-scooter program in Saskatoon. If approved, a shared e-scooter pilot project could be in place by 2023.
Phase one has already taken place where input was collected from stakeholders, the public and e-scooter companies to discuss the rules, requirements and other factors that impact shared e-scooters so it could be a workable concept in Saskatoon.
That Draft Regulatory Framework is now available to the public to review. The City of Saskatoon wants to know what Saskatoon residents think of the proposed framework. Click here for the link to the all the background information and how you can provide your feedback to the plan.
Feedback submitted by September 29 will be considered in Phase 2 of the engagement process and in the report to City Council.
