The past few days have really felt like the height of summer versus the waning of the season with highs hovering in and around the mid-30s.
Saskatoon broke a temperature record Saturday and did so again on Sunday. On Saturday, the daytime high topped out at 35.1 degrees Celsius. The old record for September 3rd was set in 1940 with a high of 32.2 degrees.
On Sunday, Saskatoon experienced its hottest day ever in September, since records have been kept for the community. The mercury reached 35.7 degrees, which breaks the previous record for the month set on September 4th of 1978 which also happened to be the previous all time high for the day at 35.3 degrees before it was knocked down Sunday.
Dan Fulton, a meteorologist with Environment Canada says the next week will be a bit cooler compared to weather experienced this weekend.
“This is the last really hot day (Monday) and then we have a cold front moving through tonight which will bring quite a bit cooler air, so we’re looking at a bit of a reprieve to the mid 20s for Tuesday and then it kind of bounces around a bit. We get one more hot day Wednesday as the heat rebounds and then another cold front comes through.”
Fulton says it’s not common to see heat records shattered day after day in September.
“Well, it’s not that usual, but I mean we’re just at the tail end of summer so if you’re going to get it at all, it’s going to be kind of the Labour Day weekend.”
North Battleford was the hottest place in the province Sunday having reached 36.4 degrees, a new record for September 4th. The previous record was 33 set back in 1978.
Kindersley tied their high for September 4th at 34.5 which was set back in 1978.
Meadow Lake broke their previous high for day as the mercury there reached 33 degrees. That breaks the 2013 record of 30.8.
A Heat Warning and Special Air Quality Statement are in effect for Saskatoon as of Monday morning.
Environment Canada says wildfire smoke, which moved into the region from Alberta and the northwestern US, is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility at times.
