One of the ten people charged in connection to the death of Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere in 2019 has been sentenced to ten years in jail. Thirty year old Shayla Orthner was charged with 1st degree murder, kidnapping and improperly interfering with human remains. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given 1,671 days credit for time served, which leaves 1,981 days left to serve. It works out to just under five-and-a-half years. She must submit her DNA and is banned from owning firearms for life.
Twenty-five year old Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere, who was from Edmonton, was reported missing in May of 2019 after traveling to the North Battleford area for a funeral. Two months later, a police dog found Laverdiere’s remains in a rural area outside of North Battleford. Three of the ten people charged are still going through the justice system.

Danita Thomas guilty of manslaughter
Brent Checkosis, Samuel Takakenew, Mavis Takakenew – accessory after the fact to murder
Charles St. Savard- kidnapping with intent to unlawfully confine
Nikita Cook – found guilty of first degree murder
Those whose trials are pending:
Soaring Eagle Whitstone is charged with first degree murder, improperly interfering with a body and theft of a vehicle. Her trial by judge alone begins next month.
Jesse Sangster is facing the same charges and is scheduled for trail next January.
Nicole Cook is also facing the same charges and is scheduled for trial in October.
