July heat has helped crops in eastern Saskatchewan that were seeded late due to very wet conditions.
Agricultural commentator Kevin Hursh says some producer fears have been allayed to some degree—but notes a late August frost is never out of the realm of possibility.
Speaking to farmers at Ag in Motion last week, Hursh heard a whole bunch of stories about the 2022 crop with conditions running from good-to-excellent to fair-to-poor depending on rainfall during the growing season.
A farmer in the Assiniboia area (about 175 km southwest of Regina) said this will be his second worst crop ever, only behind the one grown in last year’s drought. Hursh farms in the Cabri area northwest of Swift Current and while conditions are better than last year, it will likely be another below average crop.
