June was a very wet month for some Saskatchewan communities, particularly those in the northern grainbelt. Meadow Lake recorded their second wettest June on record with 175 millimetres. That’s according to Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang who released her monthly weather statistics Monday.
La Ronge and North Battleford were also quite wet with North Battleford recording over 100 millimetres on June 13th, a one day June rainfall record.
Lang says the rainfall accumulations in Saskatoon are quite skewed as the airport only recorded one millimetre on June 20th when the city was hit by flash floods. She says rain gauges on the east side recorded much more rain for the month of June than the one at the airport.
“Well only 38 mills fell at the airport for the month of June, but like for myself, I recorded for the month, and I’m on the east side, I recorded just under 100 millimetres for the month. So that’s a difference of, you know, almost 60 millimetres in not a very far amount of space.”
Lang says lightning was below average for the month of June, despite all of the stormy weather. As for tornadoes, there were eight recorded during the month with five June 29th. A total of nine tornadoes have now touched down in Saskatchewan up until the end of June.
As for the rain down south, Regina recorded 13.1 millimetres compared to their average of close to 71. That’s their third driest June on record. Yorkton, a city that received some strong storms, only received 60 millimetres of rain in June compared to their usual 80 millimetres.
