The $19 million Preston Crossing power line upgrade is complete. SaskPower’s new transmission line and substation upgrade is designed to deliver more power to the University of Saskatchewan as well as supply power to the surrounding area as it continues to grow.
Construction began in fall 2021 after consultation with the local community and while crews managed to complete the project without planned power outages interrupting service, there were intermittent traffic restrictions.
The line connects the new Preston Crossing Substation, located along Preston Avenue, and the W.J Bunn Substation on Attridge Drive near the entrance to the Forestry Farm. SaskPower was able to use an existing Saskatoon Light and Power right-of-way for part of the line along Attridge Drive so they reduced the impact of the power line in terms of land usage but did have to remove several trees.
SaskPower says it will work with the City of Saskatoon to replenish the vegetation in the area.
