When I sat down to compose this Coffeetalk I thought of how it would have been my dad’s 100th birthday Wednesday. We had high hopes that he would make it to his 100th but he passed away at age 99 last year. I miss talking with him. You know what else is 100 years old this year? Radio. Commercial radio broadcasting began in 1922 with Canada’s first licence being CFCF Montreal. The call sign stood for “Canada’s First, Canada’s Finest”. To this day, all Canadian radio station call letters must start with the letter C with the second letter being either F, H, I, J or K. Our Saskatoon Media Group stations are CJWW, which began broadcasting in 1976, CKBL, which started in 1995, and CJMK, which started in 2001. Technology has evolved beyond belief in the past 100 years but AM and FM radio have continued to consistently deliver, free of charge, music and information at home beside the bed when we wake up in the morning, in our bathrooms while we get ready for the day, in the kitchen while we eat, in the family or living room, in our vehicles, and at work if we wish and are allowed. We have local on-air personalities to play good music and provide companionship and information same as we’ve been doing decade after decade, which is why local businesses pay to advertise their products and services over our airwaves knowing they are reaching into the ears and minds of thousands of potential customers. I want to wish my industry a very happy 100th birthday with many more birthdays to come.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
