The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre has a gift for lovers of the annual Rez Christmas series. It’s the 20th year for this annual presentation and this year’s play is called The Gift.
Director Danny Knight notes the series with its three beloved kohkums portrays Indigenous lives with all the humour and their own spin on Christmas. In this year’s play, one of the kohkums is accidentally struck by a snow blower and ends up in the hospital, but Knight says she is tough, and she survives.
Knight says, “To us laughter is medicine. Indigenous people use humour as a way to cope.”
Keeping with tradition, The Gift was written by local playwright Curtis Peeteetuce, who has written all of the Christmas Rez plays.
It runs Wednesday through Sunday at The Broadway Theatre. Tickets are available through the GTNT website or from Broadway Theatre.
Knight adds that the usual COVID-19 protocols are in place. Only 50 per cent capacity for seating, and masking and vaccines are mandated.
