The first free standing hospice in Saskatchewan has been home to 87 patients since the doors opened on January 28th, up until the end of October.
Site Lead for Hospice at Glengarda, Jennifer Dunne, says patients and their families have been appreciative that there is a hospice for end of life care in Saskatoon. She explains that the care goes beyond pain management. It’s a home-like environment with a holistic approach to care which includes bringing in music therapists, creative arts, social workers and spiritual care. She believes it helps patients struggling with the reality of what’s going on, leading them to be able to have what might be considered a good death. Dunne says Glengarda helps the patients in the bed and the family around the bed.
There are no volunteers at this point because of COVID-19, but when it is safer, Dunne says they will be welcomed. Donations are accepted through the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation. You can click on the link here.
