Three members of the Corman Park Police Service were officially recognized by the Saskatoon Chapter of MADD Canada at an RM council meeting on Monday.
Constable James Gordon was awarded a gold medallion for his 23 impaired driving arrests between April of last year and this year.
Silver medallions were given to Constable Kyle Rathgeber with 14 impaired driving arrests and Constable Dana Screiner, with eight arrests.
The Van de Vorst Family Award is presented annually to officers who demonstrate extraordinary efforts towards the enforcement of impaired driving laws.
It’s named after a family of four, Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst and their two-year old son Miguire and five-year-old daugher Kamryn, who were killed in a crash with an impaired driver in 2016 on Highway 11 at Wanuskewin Road in the RM of Corman Park.
A news release from the Corman Park Police Service says it is the only police service in Saskatchewan with a policy of mandatory breath samples to all motorists stopped between 6 p.. and 6 a.m., which has led to a drastic increase in the number of impaired driving apprehensions.
Before the mandatory testing legislation, the CPPS arrested 7 impaired drivers in 2018, then in 2019, 40 impaired drivers were apprehended and so far in 2020, the Service has arrested 65 impaired drivers.
