Statistics Canada has been crunching the numbers and says, in 2018, Saskatoon Police reported an overall crime rate of 8,795 incidents per 100 thousand population. That was 23 per cent lower than in Saskatchewan and 60 per cent higher than in Canada. Over the ten years up to 2018, police-reported crime declined by 19 per cent in Saskatoon with a nine per cent decline in Saskatchewan. In Canada, it declined by 17 per cent.
The severity of crime was virtually unchanged in Saskatoon between 2017 and 2018 showing an increase of less than one per cent. Over the ten years up to 2018, the severity of crime in the city declined by 15 per cent compared with a nine per cent decline in the province and a 17 per cent decline in the country.
In 2018, the violent crime rate was 41 per cent lower in the city than in the province but one per cent higher than the national rate. The rate in Saskatoon was 40 per cent lower than 10 years before. The severity of violent crime in the city declined by 34 per cent over that same period.
Police-reported hate crime in Saskatoon was higher at 3.4 incidents per 100 thousands than in the province but lower than in Canada. Saskatoon had eight homicides in 2018 resulting in a rate of 2.44 per 100 thousand; while the provincial rate was 2.93 and the national rate was 1.76.
