The mother of Evan Penner, a man who was recently seen in an video being arrested by Saskatoon Police officers, says she has watched the video and she doesn’t think it is right what happened to him that day. Sherri Penner says she was very upset, and couldn’t even finish watching the video.
Penner travelled from Northern Manitoba to get her son Evan, and spoke to the media Thursday, at FSIN in Saskatoon. “As a mother, it is very hard to see that happen to your child, and I wouldn’t want that to happen to anyone else’s child.” Penner added that she wants to find justice for Evan, saying he didn’t deserve what he went through.
Lawyer, Eleanore Sunchild, who also works with the Treaty Protection Unit for FSIN, was also present, and says Sherri has seen Evan, and that the family is asking for privacy currently. She says Evan is severely traumatized by what happened to him.
Chief Bobby Cameron is calling for Restorative Justice after the video, showing an officer trying to take Evan Penner into custody, pepper spraying and punching him several times, surfaced this week.
Cameron says investigating into education and rehabilitation would play a big factor in addressing these problems in the future, not investing money towards new correctional funding.
Cameron thanked the individual who videotaped the incident, and said serious, immediate change needs to happen. He called for the officers involved to be terminated, as the family of Evan Penner has requested.
On Tuesday, Saskatoon Police responded to the release of the video.
