A stretch of road near the Chief Mistawasis Bridge will see its speed limit increased by 10 kilometers per hour.
City Council voted to increase the speed limit from 50 km/h to 60 km/h through the Northeast Swale along McOrmond Road and Central Ave. An increase to 60 km/h will also be seen for the section of McOrmond Road from Fedoruk Drive. The speed limit across the Chief Mistawasis Bridge will continue to be 70 km/h.
Reports to City Council from an engineering perspective showed the increases on the roadway to be feasible. The estimated cost will be around $11,000 for the change over of signage, funding that can be provided for in existing operations budgets for 2020. The Northeast Swale Working Group had identified concerns with an increase in wildlife collisions if the speed limits are increased.
Last November a report by the transportation committee said the Chief Mistawasis Bridge sees an average of 9,900 vehicles a day, which was well below the projected traffic numbers of 14,600 to 21,700 vehicles a day when the bridge first opened.
