Canada is looked upon by many international professionals as the land of opportunity.
A doctor from Serbia is one of them.
Velimir Milenkovic is now working in Saskatoon as an assistant to four surgeons.
The 41-year-old says the decision to leave Serbia where he had been practicing for several years was complicated.
Dr. Milenkovic says state officials determined what type of medicine he would practice and called Serbian hospitals dangerous places to work because of rampant crime and little security.
The complicating factor was notification from Serbian authorities that he would be moving into a residency in his chosen field of Obstetrics and Gynacology just as his Canadian immigration visa was approved.
Velimir had to decide between a practice in his preferred field while knowing what to expect in his native country and a move to Canada, which would be a venture into the unknown.
He says he went with his gut and packed to start a new life in a new country.
