An electric city bus could soon be picking you up on your next trip to work, the mall or your friends place. That’s because Saskatoon Transit is ready to roll out a one-year pilot project that would see one electric battery bus on the streets of Saskatoon. The recommendation for the pilot comes after the Saskatchewan Research Council completed a feasibility study. The study would see how the bus will operate throughout all four seasons. A report presented to the city’s transportation committee Monday says if the pilot is successful, Saskatoon Transit would start converting its entire fleet to electric battery buses in the year 2022. The report also says that electric buses could save $300 thousand dollars each over the course of their lifetime as they break down less often and last longer. A Request for Proposals was issued earlier this year for a one-year lease of an electric battery bus and charger. From the RFP, two potential companies were selected. Now, the city will select one of the companies to move forward in the pilot.
