Well this is berry nice. I read something I hadn’t known about Britain’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Back in 2004 some high and mighty British bureaucrats declared that Saskatoon berries were a “novel food” and classified them as perhaps being unsafe to eat. Johnson called the ban silly and obviously absurd and rightly so as we very well know. He wrote about the “vengeful meddlesome of the bureaucrats” that had all Saskatoon berry products stripped from shelves in Britain in May of 2004. The ban ended later that same year after Germany declared there was nothing wrong with Saskatoon berries which due to the European Union single-market principle indicated the berries were fit for consumption in all member states. That was 15 years ago and today Saskatoon berries aren’t only sold in the U.K., they’re also grown there. Plus, the name has changed. They call them “juneberries”. That name started in some U.S. States and spread to Europe. Apparently researchers at Cornell University found that Americans loved the taste of Saskatoon berries but the name didn’t resonate as well as juneberry. I find that berry interesting.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
