If you watch Coronation Street, you may have heard of Freshco. Saskatchewan will soon have some FreshCo stores, but they are not related to the British TV show’s store. A Canadian company which owns Safeway, Sobeys, and IGA among others is opening 4 of its FreshCo stores in Saskatchewan to replace 4 Safeway locations.

Empire Company will be opening the FreshCo discount banner stores at Regent Park in Regina, and at 3 locations in Saskatoon – 33rd Street, Confederation, and Market Mall. The Safeway stores at these locations will close in March and it’s expected the new FreshCo stores will open in the summer.

Last year, Empire announced converting about 25 per cent of its underperforming Safeway and Sobeys locations over 5 years, and now they are about a third of the way through the task.
