It was an emotional Thursday morning at Bethlehem Catholic High School in Saskatoon. Alex and Marilou Haughey who suddenly lost their son J.P. in a drunk driving accident nearly five years ago, donated a grand piano to their son’s former high school. On May 5th, 2014, J.P. was driving two of his classmates, Sarah Wensley and Kara Mitsuing to track practice when suddenly, they were stuck by a vehicle being driven by a drunk driver. Both J.P. and Sarah died in the collision while Kara was seriously injured. J.P’s dad, Alex says playing music and playing the piano had always been one of his son’s passions, and in addition to playing music, J.P. always wanted to own a grand piano, so that’s why they chose to donate a piano to the school. Darcie Lich, J.P.’s music teacher during his time at Bethlehem says it’s a remarkable opportunity to have the piano at the school for students in memory of someone who was such an achiever. Donations to purchase the piano in J.P’s name came from all over including those in the Filipino community who are both here and overseas, extended family and friends and those within the school community. More than a thousand students packed the school’s gym for the event. Marilou, J.P.’s mom shared the story that before J.P. had his drivers’ license, he would ask his mom to drive him to Long and McQuade just so he could play the grand piano.
