A program to help low income customers of SaskPower to have their homes become more energy efficient will now be available to customers of Saskatoon Light and Power.
City Council has approved a partnership agreement with the Crown Corporation at a cost of $75-thousand for the first year of the Energy Assistance Program.
General Manager of Utilities and Environment for the City, Angela Gardiner, says the program provides enhanced education, awareness and accessibility of energy efficient measures to low income households.
The goal for the first year is to help out 125 households.
Funding for the second and third year will be discussed in future budget negotiations.
The $75-thousand is being taken from a water conservation project, but Gardiner says it only fast-tracks the money – it’s not at the expense of another program.
Mayor Charlie Clark says this partnership directly benefits residents and will provide consistency in Saskatoon with both SaskPower and Saskatoon Light and Power customers having access to the program.
He adds it improves the quality of life for these customers, helps them save money and it reduces our environmental footprint.
