The Prime Minister says the government is making $2.2 billion available through the gas tax fund for municipalities. Justin Trudeau says normally they receive the money in two installments. But, he says the government knows that cities and towns need this money right away as they deal with COVID-19. That’s why the full amount is being paid out now.
Letters have been sent to all provincial and territorial leaders to outline how the process will unfold.
Trudeau says his government will not falter in reconciliation efforts with First Nations people.
The Prime Minister was asked if there’s a danger the federal response might be slipping away because of attention on the pandemic. He admits that work has been hampered by the pandemic but their work with First Nations continues.
The P-M was also questioned about the turmoil in the United States after the death of a Minneapolis man at the hands of police. Trudeau says meaningful action needs to continue to end racism. He says it is past time for this to change.
