The Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan responded to over 3,000 calls to its emergency hotline last year.
Board of Directors Chair, Bonnie Dell, says the WRSOS has the only provincial wildlife rescue line in Canada. If you find wildlife you think needs help, call the hotline before trying to rescue it.
The Rehabilitation Society takes the animals to licensed rehabilitators in the province and also works with veterinary clinics. Dell believes they have rescued almost every type of wildlife in the province, but conservation officers handle the larger animals. The Rehabilitation Society has dealt with everything from beavers to bear cubs, from fawns to foxes and from birds to bats.
The WRSOS is volunteer-run and receives no funding other than 2 grants for summer students to give veterinary and biology students some hands-on experience.
Dell says with the number of calls they receive they are a victim of their own success and are going to have to look at some alternative ways of bringing some money in along with their fundraising efforts.
