The polls before election night suggested there would be a minority government, but it wasn’t known whether it would go to the Conservatives or the Liberals. We now know it is a Liberal minority and NDP leader Jadmeet Singh has already indicated to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau that the New Democrats can play a constructive role in the new Parliament.
The Liberal Party lost its only seat in Saskatchewan in Regina-Wascana. Conservative Michael Kram beat Liberal Ralph Goodale, a longtime Cabinet Minister. Goodale thanked his supporters and volunteers for all their help over his last 26 years in the riding. He says it has been a singular honour to step into the House of Commons and say he represents Regina-Wascana.
The only main party leader that didn’t win in his riding was Maxime Bernier, former Conservative who first won in his riding in 2006, but lost in this election representing the People’s Party of Canada.
The NDP’s Sheri Benson lost her seat in the riding of Saskatoon-West. She says she’ll miss working with those in the area. Conservative Brad Redekopp took Saskatoon-West by over 3-thousand votes. Redekopp feels dissatisfaction with the Trudeau Liberals brought former Liberal and N-D-P voters to his campaign and credits working together with the other Saskatoon Conservative M-P’s as another factor in defeating the incumbent.
Saskatoon Grasswood M-P Kevin Waugh feels getting re-elected for a second term is like getting rehired after four years on the job and is excited about working with a strong united Saskatchewan Conservative caucus in Ottawa.
Corey Tochor emerged victorious in Saskatoon University and is anxious to help hold the Liberal Minority government accountable. The rookie M-P admits he has a lot to learn but feels his experience in provincial politics will be helpful.
Kelly Block was re-elected in Carlton Trail Eagle-Creek and is thankful and humbled by the support of close to 80-percent of voters in the riding. She feels the Conservatives were an effective opposition in the last government and will be again.
The Liberals captured 156 seats across Canada, 14 short of forming a majority government. The Conservatives won 122, the Bloc Quebecois have 32 seats, the New Democrats 24, the Green Party has three seats and former Liberal Attorney General and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould is the lone independent after winning her Vancouver area riding.
Here are the winners in each of Saskatchewan’s 14 riding’s. They are all Conservative members.
