The importance of agriculture and the agri-food manufacturing sector varies from province to province but it is especially important here. Statistics Canada says that, while ag and agri-food produced the highest dollar volume in Ontario at $15.3 billion, that represented only about two percent of the province’s Gross Domestic Product in 2015. In Saskatchewan, the dollar volume was $7.4 billion but that was about 10 per cent of our GDP. Of all the provinces, ours was the largest share of GDP. In Canada, canola farming is the largest contributor to Canadian GDP reaching $4.6 billion in 2015. That was 18.5 per cent of agriculture’s national GDP. Canola farming is also the largest agriculture industry in Saskatchewan, representing about 40 per cent of agriculture’s GDP here.
