Three University of Saskatchewan based agricultural research projects have been selected to receive funding from Genome Canada.
Genomics will be used to boost wheat and lentil production, as well studying diagnostic testing for antimicrobial resistance in livestock management.
“By having better diagnostic tests, we will be better be able to better target our antibiotics that we are using and use the right drug for the right problem at the right time,” says Cheryl Waldner, USask professor of large animal clinical sciences and leader of a multidisciplinary team.
The three projects were part of a $41 million national announcement made on Tuesday afternoon by federal Science and Sports Minister Kirsty Duncan. The news conference was held during the International Wheat Congress in Saskatoon.
