Six new resident treatment beds and three new permanent full-time addictions counsellors have been added and hired at Calder Centre in Saskatoon.
The addictions treatment facility now has a total of 38 permanent beds, which means those requiring a longer stay than the average four weeks can do so. A former client of Calder, Shane Partridge says he credits the staff and the adult program at the facility for saving his life. Partridge who attended Calder in 2011 says people receiving help will be able to be closer to their families and less young people will travel further distances to other cities where beds may be available. “I’ve heard lots of people hearing that beds may be available in Moose Jaw or Regina so they attempt to hitchhike down there and a lot of stuff can happen between here and there.” Last year, the facility provided service to 377 adults. Calder’s adult program provides a safe and supportive environment to help those battling addictions issues. In the last budget, the province has committed $402 million dollars for mental health supports and services.
