High school grads Houston Smith of L’Ecole Francais, Sarah Hazen of St. Joseph and Emma Engen of Walter Murray are the 2018 recipients of the Lloyd Saunders Kinsmen Scholarships.
The trio will be recognized during Friday night’s Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner.

Lloyd Saunders High School Athletic Scholarship Award
Each year The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon presents the Lloyd Saunders High School Athletic Scholarship Award to graduating Saskatoon high school athletes. The $2,000.00 scholarship is designated to further the recipient’s education at the post secondary level. Outstanding high school athletic involvement, community involvement and community service are some of the key selection criteria.

Lloyd Saunders Kinsmen Scholarship are Houston Smith, a graduate of École Candienne Française, Sarah Hazen, a graduate of St. Joseph High School and Emma Engen, a graduate of Walter Murray Collegiate
Houston Smith graduated with a bi-lingual Grade 12 Diploma from École Candienne Française in June of 2018. He is currently enrolled in the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan with the goal of achieving a four-year Bachelor of Commerce Degree. Houston plans to continue his athletic career with the Huskies Men’s Track and Field team this year.
Houston was very involved in athletics during his high school years at École Candienne Française, overcoming any obstacle in his way to play almost all the sports ECF had to offer. His most prominent achievements were in track and field, cross country running, basketball, volleyball and badminton. He also participated in golf, curling and archery. Houston had strong leadership skills on and off the court. He encouraged his teammates to fight through challenges and strive for excellence. He took time out to help younger athletes, always giving them lots of positive feedback.
In the words of his athletic director, “Houston has been one of those special students who have left his mark within the school with his athletic skills. I know he will continue to excel in this direction, as it was a passion with him during his time at our school”

Sarah Hazen graduated from St. Joseph High School in June of 2018. She is currently attending The King’s University in Edmonton where she is enrolled in a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Kinesiology working towards her Pre-optometry degree. She is still involved in athletics as a member of The King’s Eagles Women’s volleyball team.
Sarah was extremely involved in athletics over her four years at St. Joseph. She excelled at Volleyball for all 4 years of high school, playing on the senior team for 3 of those seasons. She helped lead her volleyball teams to very successful seasons, culminating with a city championship in grade 12 and provincial bronze medals in grade 11 and 12. Sarah also excelled in basketball, being a big part of the provincial championship team in her grade 10 year. Other sports that Sarah was involved in at St. Joseph included badminton, wrestling, golf and track & field. Outside of school, Sarah excelled in club volleyball, club basketball and beach volleyball.
Sarah also found time to maintain a high academic standing and be involved in many school and community activities. She was on the SRC for all 4 years, was a member of Social Justice We Day and completed the grade 2 Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano. She volunteered for the Friendship Inn, Salvation Army, Operation Santa, Ronald McDonald House, the Canadian Cancer Society, and many church events. Sarah and her sister donated money to support a foster child in Kenya.
Sarah is a very well-rounded person, with talents in many areas. In the words of her Principal, “When Sarah sets her mind to something, she can accomplish any task in front of her.”

Emma Engen graduated from Walter Murray Collegiate in June of 2018. She is currently attending The University of Saskatchewan, College of Agriculture and Bio resources. Emma is continuing her athletic career as a member of the Huskies Women’s Basketball Team.
During her four years at Walter Murray she was very involved in athletics as a four year member of both the Senior Volleyball and Senior Basketball teams. She was also a member of the soccer team and badminton team. Outside of school, Emma played flag football – winning 2 national championships. Emma received recognition as the top female athlete for Walter Murray in all four of her high school years. She is a standout athlete who won multiple All Star and MVP honours at various tournaments. Emma was on the Provincial Basketball teams at the U15, U16 and U17 levels. Most notably, she competed in the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg where she was the team captain.
Not only was she involved in athletics, but she was a Link Leader at Walter Murray in Grade 12. She has volunteered her time for the Friendship Inn, Food Bank, Hoops for Hope, Fast and Female, the Tori Hanson Memorial Fund and was an assistant coach for a volleyball team at Holliston Elementary School. All the while, she maintained a high academic standing due to her incredible work ethic that allowed her to balance being a student-athlete.
In the words of her basketball coach “Emma has always studied, competed and carried herself as a true champion and leader. She will make a difference in whatever career she chooses to pursue. “
