Saskatchewan has the shortest wait time in Canada for medically necessary treatment. The Fraser Institute says the wait time here is 15.4 weeks. The national average is 19.8 weeks. The study examines the total wait times patients face across 12 medical specialities from referral by a general practitioner, to consultation with a specialist, to when the patient ultimately receives treatment. Last year, the wait time in Saskatchewan was 19.8 weeks. Bacchus Barua, associate director of health policy at the Fraser Institute, says, “Long waits for medical treatment aren’t a trivial matter. They can increase suffering for patients, decrease quality of life, and in the worst cases, lead to disability or death.” New Brunswick has the longest wait time at 45 weeks; even worse than its showing last year at 41.7 weeks.
