The provincial government has set up a framework to measure resilience in the face of a changing global climate.
It’s part of the government’s Prairie Resilience plan and covers a broad set of measure to ensure residents and communities can cope with and adapt to climate change.
That means being able to deal with changing environmental conditions, such as extreme weather or flooding and adapting to a low-carbon emission economy.
Some of the specific measures are floodplain mapping for at-risk communities, provincial forest harvest designs, and promoting the diversification of crops to enhance soil health, which helps to manage pests and diseases.
The Environment Ministry says another measure is to have emergency preparedness plans in place for all communities, so they can respond in an efficient and coordinated manner.
The Prairie Resilience strategy includes emissions reductions in electricity, upstream oil and gas and industrial facilities that emit more than 25-thousand tonnes of emissions each year.
