November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The RCMP says if you are facing a violent situation, if possible leave or call police and if it is a crisis make sure you tell police whether there is a weapon in play or if your life is in danger. Joy-Ann Allin with the YWCA in Saskatoon says their Shine-A-Light holiday campaign allows the donor to specify what programming their money supports and for many that is the crisis shelter and residence programs. These are for women who are experiencing homelessness, dealing with housing issues or fleeing interpersonal violence. The goal this year is to raise $40-thousand. Other program areas include a youth program which houses young women, a transitional housing program where women are moving towards getting out in the community and living independently. There are also counselling services, employment services, early learning and wellness programming.
Another option is social good fundraising which could mean donors host small parties in their home, or businesses host events involving their clients or their team – the staff- and it is a monetary gift to the YWCA. They call it party with a purpose.
Adopt a room is another way for businesses and individuals to give. Just call the YWCA and ask about adopting a room. You can make a gift of $2,000 or $1,000 and designate it to a room in the YWCA.
