The NDP has formally introduced a bill to increase Saskatchewan’s minimum wage to $15 per hour. The bill would see a $12 minimum on January first, and then increase by a dollar a year, on the same date every year, until 2022. Leader Ryan Meili says the minimum hit $15 in Alberta last month and their economy is vastly outperforming ours. He says, “Poverty wages hurt the most vulnerable, reward big out-of-province companies, and leave less money to spend in local businesses.” Meili says Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada where the minimum wage is less than half the median wage. In a news release the NDP says, according to the government’s current formula, the minimum wage would not reach $15 per hour until 2052.
