The City of Saskatoon is looking into possibly raising the pay for city councillors and Mayor Charlie Clark. The reasoning behind it is due to an increase in their federal taxes. Starting next year on January 1st, the federal government will end personal income tax exemptions for elected officials. In a report heading to the governance and priorities committee today (tues), city administration is recommending that the mayor and city councillor’s pay be increased to make up for what will be lost. Prior to the federal government’s decision to end personal income tax exemptions for elected officials one-third of politicians’ income was exempt. One of the options in the report, if chosen would make the mayor’s salary $145,152 dollars a year beginning in 2019. Today’s meeting begins at 1 p.m. at City Hall.
