I seem to have an almost incessant need to talk about speed nowadays. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older and slowing down, including my driving. Having been smashed into a couple of times on Saskatoon streets may have helped as well. I’ve decided I’d rather arrive late than dead. For the record, I told the Mayor and a certain Councillor I know quite well that I support reducing the limit to 40 on residential streets. Not that I get a vote. I noticed on Monday driving back from Regina on highway 11 that there seemed to be more people than usual in a real hurry. Now I’d never openly admit to cruising at 120 but let’s pretend, hypothetically, that I was. I thought there was something wrong with my speedometer because vehicles were routinely passing us in the left hand lane, cars, trucks, SUV’s and yes, even vans. There wasn’t a police car in sight all the way back from Regina, which is unusual on a Rider game day. I bet if I had decided to run with the pack and speed up to 130 or faster, a police cruiser would have magically appeared out of nowhere. But I didn’t and arrived home safe, which is all that’s important. I guess I’ve just lost that youthful inner craving for speed and power.
