Six months after the fact, U of S wrestler Laryssa Barry is a Canada West champion and a U Sports bronze medallist.
Barry moved up a spot following a positive doping test was discovered from Fraser Valley athlete Karla Godinez Gonzalez. Barry wins Canada West gold in the 55-kilogram weight division and moved up to third place in the U Sports Championship as a result of the doping infraction. WRES: Canada West championship results altered after doping infraction
Monday, 24 September 2018 — EDMONTON – Canada West announced Monday that results from the 2018 Canada West Women’s Wrestling Championship have been altered, following a doping infraction.
Both the women’s 55 kg results, along with the CW team standings, have been adjusted following a positive test from Fraser Valley athlete Karla Godinez Gonzalez.
- Saskatchewan’s Laryssa Barry has been awarded CW gold in the 55 kg division from the 2018 CW Women’s Wrestling Championship
- Barry also moved into third in the 2018 U SPORTS 55 kg results, following a doping infraction announced Monday
Changes to the conference championship results were announced by Canada West in conjunction with the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) and U SPORTS, who also made announcements Monday.
Godinez Gonzalez claimed gold in the CW women’s 55 kg division, and was also named the CW Women’s Wrestling Athlete of the Year. Her CW individual award has been vacated and will not be re-awarded, while the altered results in the 55 kg division and team standings can be found below.
A second-year student-athlete in 2017-18, Godinez Gonzalez also had her U SPORTS silver medal revoked following her positive test.
Saskatchewan’s Laryssa Barry is now the CW women’s champion in the 55 kg division, and also moves into third in last year’s U SPORTS results.
While Monday’s announcement did alter team point totals at the CW championships, it didn’t change the order of the standings, as Alberta (gold), Saskatchewan (silver), and Calgary (bronze) remain the medalists ahead of Regina, and Fraser Valley.
