CUPE Local 1975 says its bargaining committee has reached an impasse with the University of Saskatchewan in the current round of contract talks. According to the union, the main sticking point is the pension plan. The union says the university is threatening to make unilateral cuts to the plan. An Arbitrator has previously ruled that the current agreement isn’t strong enough to protect against unilateral changes. The local wants to add language to the agreement assuring the right to bargain pensions. Local President Craig Hannah says, “Our members will not accept the University unilaterally telling them what their pension will or will not be.” CUPE 1975 represents 19 hundred members at the University of Saskatchewan in non-academic positions. The union bargaining committee has served written notice to the employer and to the Minsiter of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety about the state of the talks. Bargaining has been underway for nearly two years.
