The frequency and severity of summer storms across the prairies has raised a red flag for the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Bureau statistics indicate insured storm damage this summer has caused over $200-million in damage and the figure has hit $264-million since May of 2017. The Director of Consumer and Industrial Relations for Western Canada cautions home, car, business and property owners to make sure they have the optional storm damage coverage. Rob Du Pruis says heavy rain, hail and tornados are considered insurable events, so municipalities and provinces won’t pay for storm related damage.
The bureau figures insured damage from a heavy rain and hail storm that swept through Manitoba and Saskatchewan in mid-June totaled $90-million.
