Saskatoon will soon be home to the Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health which is one of 13 institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
The IIPH will be making the move from the Health Sciences North Research Institute in Sudbury, Ontario to the University of Saskatchewan campus with operations in Saskatoon set to begin on October 1st.
Carrie Bourassa, the institute’s scientific director is looking forward to working at the U of S as the school’s continued research into Indigenous health care and the number of Indigenous peoples at the school will help with the institute’s priorities including prioritizing Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous research methodologies and asset based research.
Over the past couple of years, the institute has been holding community engagements across Canada which resulted in development grants being launched for initiatives including the Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research and the Indigenous Component of Healthy Life Trajectory program.
The IIPH leads the national health research agenda to improve and promote the health of Indigenous people in Canada. Bourassa returns to the prairies.
She previously attended the University of Regina and spent more than 15 years as a professor of Indigenous health studies at the First Nations University of Canada.
