Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defensive end Charleston Hughes was named one of the C-F-L’s top performers for the month for August.

The 11-year veteran had four sacks and two forced fumbles in three games during the month. He leads the C-F-L this season with 12 sacks, seven more than his nearest pursuer. In addition to his sacks, the 34-year-old has 25 tackles, three forced fumbles and a 57-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Calgary receiver Kamar Jorden and Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly were the other two selections for the C-F-L’s monthly honours. The awards were announced just as the Green and White returned to the practice field Wednesday.

Kicker Brett Lauther was on hand, but he didn’t attempt any field goals. Lauther was on the limp with an undisclosed injury after Saturday’s 24-21 victory over the host B-C Lions. Riders’ G-M and head coach Chris Jones said Lauther was fine.

       Meanwhile, defensive tackle Mic’hael Brooks didn’t participate at all in Wednesday’s first Roughriders’ workout in advance of hosting Winnipeg Sunday in the annual Labour Day Weekend Classic. G-M and head coach Chris Jones says it’s not certain if Brooks will play Sunday, adding the injury is nothing major. The Green and White and the Blue Bombers are tied for third place in the C-F-L West Division, each with five wins, as they enter their annual home-and-home series beginning with Sunday’s 55th Labour Day Weekend Classic.
