The organization, “South Saskatchewan River Watershed Stewards” is raising the alarm about an invasive aquatic plant. It says the Flowering Rush is not native to the province. It has been used in home water gardens but has now started showing up in natural water systems. One known population has been controlled for the past ten years by the Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan near Watrous. However, it has now been spotted along the South Saskatchewan River near the Alberta border. Flowering Rush can reduce the availability of water for drinking water intakes, inhibit recreational activities, impede distribution of irrigation water, and impact bio-diversity of wetlands, and fish habitat. The Stewards group is winding up its survey of the river today (thurs) from the Albert border to Highway 21 south of Leader to map the extend of the plant invasion.
