Just when you think you’ve heard it all, something new rises up and socks you right in the kisser. Today, July 6th, is International Kissing Day. I kiss….I mean I kid you not. It was established in 2006 to celebrate lovers. The origin of kissing itself is lost in the mists of time but is thought to originate from mouth to mouth feeding of parents to a child. Not exactly a romantic image, is it? Obviously the kiss evolved over the centuries to what it is today. There’s more than one type of kiss of course from the drawn-out passionate kind between lovers to the peck on the cheek when greeting a relative or friend. I think our first experience with romantic kissing, although vicariously, came from watching movies before we even hit puberty. Guess which kiss was voted the best movie kiss of all time? Some might say the one between Rhett Butler and Scarlett Ohara after he says, “You need kissing badly” in Gone with the Wind. Others who remember the Lady and the Tramp classic cartoon movie might say it was the meatball scene (trust me, if you haven’t seen it, it’s memorable). Still others might say it’s the one between Sam and Molly in the movie that still makes you teary-eyed every time you watch it: Ghost. Well, voted as the best movie kiss of all time took place between Jack and Rose on the front of the Titanic seconds after Rose utters the line, “I’m flying”. So today’s the day to take a breath mint and pucker-up for some face time with your partner, or on the cheek of friends, or, if a reserved male, maybe the old-fashioned peck on the back of her hand.
